Air Source Heat Pumps

Air source Heat Pumps

Air source heat pumps absorb heat from the air outside which is then used to heat the building. It is possible for air source heat pumps to extract useful heat from air at temperatures as low as minus 15°C. Air source heat pumps in private houses are common in mainland Europe.

For every unit of electricity used to power the pump, 3-4 units of heat are produced, making it an efficient way of heating a building providing savings of up to 70% on existing heating costs.

There are two types of heating systems which use the heat recovered from the external air.

  • Air-to-air systems which provide warm air providing heat, which is then circulated around the building.
  • Air-to-water systems heat water which is then used to provide heat in the building through radiators or an under floor system.

There are a number of factors which need to be taken into account when considering whether an air source system would be suitable for your property.

These include space for the components required for the air recovery system including access to an exterior wall

The type and quality of insulation and windows in your house and

Your existing heating system.

Air recovery systems can be installed in both new and existing houses.

Ground source Heat Pumps

Ground source heat pumps utilise the constant heat available from below ground (a depth of one metre or more). By using this heat a constant heat source can be obtained and used within the system.

For every unit of electricity used to power the pump, 3-4 units of heat are produced, making it an efficient way of heating a building providing savings of up to 70% on existing heating costs.
