Solar PV powered electricity

Solar PV

Solar powered electricity is obtained from Solar Photovoltaic Panels (PV). These panels use energy from the sun to create electricity to run appliances and lighting. Contrary to popular myth PV requires only daylight - not direct sunlight - to generate electricity. Solar panels are not light and the roof must be strong enough to take their weight, especially if the panel is placed on top of existing roof tiles. New systems can take the place of tiles or slates so installation can form part of a roof replacement and transparent units are also available for use with conservatories and glass.

Prices for PV systems vary, depending on the size of the system to be installed, type of PV cell used and the nature of the actual building on which the PV is mounted. The size of the system is dictated by the amount of electricity required.

We will be happy to discuss with you the financial and energy benefits for you from either a solar PV installation or the free solar energy roof lease scheme.

TESC Ltd has the knowledge and experience to help you make the right decision with regard to solar PV and to ensure that you get the maximum benefit for your investment in your home.

Planning Regulations and Solar PV

In England current legislation has removed the requirements for planning permission for most solar energy installations. Roof mounted and stand-alone systems can now be installed in most dwellings, as long as they respect certain size criteria. Exceptions apply for Listed Buildings, and buildings in Conservation Areas and World Heritage Sites.

In Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, the devolved governments are currently all considering changes to their legislation on permitted developments, to facilitate installations of micro generation technologies.

Until then, householders in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland must consult with their local authority regarding planning permission.
